US trade gap swells on record imports

The U.S. trade deficit rose sharply in March as imports hit an all-time high, suggesting solid demand in the steadily growing but modest economic recovery, official data showed. The Commerce Department reported the U.S. trade gap widened to $51.8 billion in March, led by a 5 percent surge in imports. The March trade shortfall was slightly bigger than analysts' average estimate of $50.2 billion. More

US jobless claims fall for 2nd week

New claims for U.S. unemployment benefits fell for the second week in a row, but not as much as expected, as the troubled labor market slowly recovers, official data showed. New jobless claims totaled 367,000 in the week ending May 5, down from an upwardly revised 368,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said. More

China said that output growth hit a three-year low in April, adding to pressure on Beijing to ease monetary policy after weak trade data the previous day fueled fears over the giant economy. Official data showed that industrial output in the workshop of the world rose 9.3 percent last month, the slowest pace since May 2009 and below the 12.2 percent forecast in a poll of economists by Dow Jones Newswires. Nissan Motor Co. has reported a $4.28 billion full-year net profit and record sales as the Japanese automaker shrugged off the devastating impact of last year's natural disasters on production. Japan's second-biggest automaker said it earned 341.43 billion yen in the fiscal year to March, up 7 percent year-on-year, surpassing its forecast of 290 billion yen and bucking a national trend of falling auto profits. An auto parts manufacturer plans a $19 million project to expand its southern Indiana operations and possibly add more than 300 jobs in the next three years. Whitesell Group announced its plans for its Jeffersonville factory during an event Friday attended by Gov. Mitch Daniels and other officials. Sentiment in the global iron ore market remained uncertain in April, even though prices for the steelmaking ingredient continued to firm over the first 20 days of the month, price provider The Steel Index said in its monthly bulletin. Spot reference prices for ore with 62 percent iron content, delivered to China, averaged $147.65 a dry metric ton for the month, up 2.1 percent on March, The Steel Index said. More

Machine tool sector in Italy doing well

While an increase of 10.5 percent for the first quarter of 2012 is good news in the Italian machine tool sector, it doesn't tell the whole story. The increase is solely due to exports which has increase 12 percent compared to the same quarter last year. In fact in a presentation at the Lamiera trade show in Bologna, Dr. Ing. Luigi Galdabini, who is managing director of Galdabini and the vice president of UCIMU (machine tools, robots and automation manufacturing association), pointed out that 80 percent of his sales are exports.
